We got an unexpected white thanksgiving due to sudden change in weather pattern. Though it was technically fall season in November, the high elevations in the Sierra range got a foot of snowfall in 24 hours. We had planned this trip along with two other families a month back and had researched visiting the nearby places including Dinkey Creek, hiking at Huntington Lake and driving to Florence Lake.

However the weather forecast warned about an approaching snow storm across the country. It was an enticing experience to see the bubbly snow hit the car’s wind screen as we drove slowly along CA 168 through the Sierra forest. At one point, cops mandated snow chains to drive further. The cars coming from the opposite direction gave some hint of how deep the snowfall had been the previous night. We had quite a trouble getting to the rental cabin from highway, our car got stuck going uphill. Visibility was getting low due to continuous snowfall, even the street signs were mostly covered with snow. It was just 0.3 miles from highway to the cabin but it took more than 30 minutes to navigate through the twists and turns of the alternate road. At one point, we got scared and wondered how we will be able to reach the cabin. Our friend was not so lucky and his car had to be towed after getting stuck in snow.

We woke up next day to a white thanksgiving, which is very unusual in California. The morning sun shone for some time and the icicles and snow blocks on the windows started dripping down.We drove through the cute town to the lake. The lake was not frozen and was shining among the white snow all around. The leisurely day winded down slowly with watching movies and a sumptuous thanksgiving dinner cooked by our friends.
